In
1929 his brother Ken sadly died, and Milne dedicated his autobiography
"It's Too Late Now" (1939) to his memory.
Milne
also wrote the famous play "Toad in Toad Hall" from
Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows" book. During
the second world war Milne wrote verses for "Punch",
and evacuees were sent to stay at Cotchford. Christopher was
serving in the Royal Engineers and suffered a head wound,
but recovered well, and returned home safely after the war
was over in 1946.
Milne's
last book "Year In Year Out" was published in 1952.
When he was 70 years old he suffered a stroke from which he
did not fully recover.
On
the 31st January 1956 Alan Alexander died aged 74 years.
Alan
Alexander Milne had written this inscription in "When
We Were Very Young"
"When
I am gone
Let Shepard decorate my tomb
And put (if there is room)
Two pictures on the stone:
Piglet, from page a hundred and eleven
And Pooh and Piglet walking(157)
And Peter thinking that they are my own
Will welcome me to heaven" |
The
pictures he mentions are of Piglet blowing his dandelion clock
and the wonderful picture (my personal favourite) of Pooh
and Piglet walking home together.
We
remember this brilliant English gentleman with gratitude and
affection.
He
gave us all Winnie the Pooh who has become a world-wide symbol
of love and friendship.
I
created this site so everyone will be aware of A. A. Milne
and E.H Shepard's wonderful work in creating our silly old
English Bear - otherwise known as Pooh
